問：以下句子裏not least二字是什麼意思？─The booming shale gas industry has received particular attention recently, not least because of its potentially enormous environmental impacts。
答：Not least常帶「特別是」的意思，例如：（1）The earthquake relief supplies were most welcome, not least by the corrupt officials（地震救濟品大受歡迎，那些貪官污吏更是得其所哉）。（2）Inflation is serious in Hong Kong, not least because the Hong Kong dollar is pegged to the US dollar（香港通貨膨脹嚴重，特別是因為港元和美元掛鈎）。讀者示下那一句是說：「頁岩氣工業欣欣向榮，最近更備受矚目，特別是因為這工業有龐大的環保潛能。」
問：最近和西人討論英文，他說假如只有兩個女兒，長女習慣稱為eldest daughter，幼女則稱為youngest daughter。為什麼不是elder daughter和younger daughter？
答：因為那西人在胡說。假如你只有兩個女兒，長女做護士，幼女做秘書，你可以告訴人家：My elder / older daughter is a nurse; and my younger daughter, a secretary。假如你有不止兩個女兒，長女做護士，次女做秘書，則可以說：My eldest / oldest daughter is a nurse; and my second daughter, a secretary。第七版《牛津高階英漢雙解詞典》elder條下有the elder of their two sons（他們兩個兒子中較年長的一個）這說法，那elder絕對不可改為eldest。

2019年7月18日 林行止   林行止專欄 「帶路」應從英殖民史汲取養料 一、 五月，兩位港人熟知不同界別的美國名人，哥爾夫球員老虎伍德（Tiger Woods）和經濟學家拉發（Arthur Laffer, 1940-），分別於上旬及下旬獲特朗普總統頒授「總統自由勳章」（Presidential Medal of Freedom），這是不分種族、國籍的老百姓能獲取的美國最高榮譽。伍德之獲獎，傳媒上似未見負面評論，拉發的卻引起經濟學界紛紛異議。 「資深」讀者對拉發大名，應當不感陌生，對「拉發曲線（Laffer Curve）則肯定記憶猶新！「數十年前」，筆者在這裏多次介紹此曲線的良窳。簡而言之，拉發總結先賢（有人追蹤至十五世紀阿拉伯的理論）的智慧，指出稅率升達某一高位，稅收不增反減，因為當納稅人覺得稅率太高時，不但會高薪請「豪富寄生蟲」的會計師和稅務律師，設計避稅甚且逃稅的策略，還會「怠工」少賺以免墜入高端稅網……。拉發所以得享大名，除人際關係極佳之外（他歷任民主共和兩黨要角及在兩黨當政的白宮擔任經濟顧問，八十年代且曾被英相戴卓爾夫人羅致，為英國的財政政策出謀獻策），其稅率高稅收少的主張，在入息稅稅率高達百分之九十的高稅年代，的確令以調低稅率為政策目標的政客十分「興奮」，遂屢被重用；加上他善解人心，令他得享大名。 拉發受知於特朗普，主要是他為特朗普競選時經濟顧問團隊的成員，特朗普當選後，他閉門寫作，與一名《華日》前編輯合撰一書《特朗普經濟學──復興美國經濟計劃內情》（Trumponomics: Inside the America First Plan to Revive Our Economy），此書雖劣評如潮（筆者未曾寓目），但「簡在帝心」，也許正是他獲殊榮的底因。 攤開稿紙（筆者仍然「筆耕」！）不是因為拉發得獎而寫他的經濟學，而是因為拉發而想起溫年斯基（Jude Wanniski；七十年代《華日》副總編輯），筆者曾在此評介他的成名作《世界這樣運作》（The Way the World Works；拉發首次公開介紹此曲線時，在座者為後成副總統的切尼、國防部長拉非爾和這位傳媒人），其中說及英國殖民史，當中有段描述，與如今中國開拓「一帶一路」頗有相通處。找出舊文一讀，覺得頗有「現實意義」，不妨「舊文新刊」。順便一提，筆者有一經常...
