You're tardy!這tardy應怎樣翻譯，才能和late分別？ 答：Late和tardy都有「遲緩」的意思，經常可以通用，例如：（1）David was kept after school for being tardy / late for class（大衞由於上課遲到，被罰放學後不得離去）。（2）The library fined me $10 for the tardy / late return of the book（我遲了還書，被圖書館罰了十元）。當然，late和tardy並不完全同義：tardy多指因怠惰、疏忽、不及早行動等引起的遲緩，而late所說的遲緩，則可能有其他原因，責任未必在遲緩者。例如因嚴重交通事故而遲到，一般會稱為late；因貪睡而遲到，則多會稱為tardy。但單看You're tardy一語，只能和You're late一樣，譯做「你遲了」，不可能有不同譯法。 問：說「在巴士、火車、渡輪或飛機上」，介系詞（preposition）應用in還是on？ 答：說bus、train、ferry、plane等大型公共交通工具，介系詞應用on；說小汽車（car）、小船（boat）、小型私人飛機等，則用in，例如：（1）I finished reading the novel on the ferry to Lantau（在往大嶼山的渡輪上，我讀完那本小說）。（2）I crossed over to Ap Lei Chau in a rowing boat（我搭划艇，渡海到鴨脷洲）。
