問：Stomachache（胃痛、肚子痛）是可數（countable）還是不可數（uncountable）名詞？

答：英式英文以ache結尾的名詞，指痛症，一般是不可以數的；指痛症的發作，則可以數，例如：（1）There is no instant cure for backache（背痛不可以一下子醫好）。（2）He is suffering from backache / a backache（他背痛）。Stomachache、toothache（牙痛）等，同樣兼有「可數」和「不可數」的用法。

留意headache（頭痛）習慣作可數名詞，所以He is suffering from a headache這一句的a不可略去。

美式英文和英式不同的，是所有以ache結尾的名詞，無論指痛症還是痛症的發作，都作可數名詞用，例如不會說no instant cure for backache等，而會說no instant cure for backaches。

Heartache不是指痛症，而是指「傷心」，所以和上述的各種ache不同，只作不可數名詞用，例如：He caused his parents much heartache（他令父母十分傷心）。

問：以下一句，哪個選擇正確？──Although Paul is living on his own, he feels anything but / nothing but lonely。

答：Anything but是「毫不」或「絕對不」，nothing but則是「無非」，例如：（1）He is anything but a yesman（他絕對不是應聲蟲）。（2）He is nothing but a yesman（他無非是應聲蟲）。讀者示下那一句，明顯是說「他雖然獨自居住，卻毫不感到寂寞」，應用anything but。
