Assure = ensure? - 古德明
I assure you that I have ensured that she will be taken good care of(你放心,我已經安排妥當,保證她會獲得好好照顧)。
不過,查第四版《朗文當代英文詞典》Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English,你會看到assure還有一個解釋:「to make something certain to happen or to be achieved = ensure(使某事一定會發生或完成,等於ensure)」,例句是:Excellent reviews have assured the film's success(由於影評大力推許,這齣電影一定叫座)。 They have spared no efforts to ensure the film's success(為求這齣電影叫座,他們事事不遺餘力)。
英語學者魯姆(Adrian Room)編寫的《難辨字義詞典》Dictionary of Confusing Words and Meanings,把二字的分別說得很清楚:「"Success is assured"(means)simply that it is certain. "Success is ensured" means that particular steps or actions have been taken to guarantee it(Success is assured只表示一定會成功。
